March 9th Succession Planning Webinar to Include Stories from Two Farm Families

multi generation farm family

Do you know friends or acquaintances that have procrastinated on their succession planning for their farm business and farmland or who are just plain stuck?

If so, please help them by letting them know of the webinar The Land Conservancy of McHenry County and the Liberty Prairie Foundation are organizing Wednesday, March 9, entitled “Making Succession Planning a Success for Your Family & Farmland.”

This two-hour webinar will help families jumpstart their planning so they have better family bonds and pride in the future they are giving their farmland.

Joy Kirkpatrick of the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Profitability will share insights about the family issues that can keep families from getting a planning process, how to overcome them, and how a succession facilitator can be invaluable in helping your family develop a plan efficiently and fairly.

Mike Downey of Next Gen Ag Advocates will then help attendees understand the other experts you will need in the process, how to choose them, and tips for when there are no next-generation family members interested in farming but keeping the land farmed in the future is important.

We’re grateful, too, that two farmland-owning families will share their experiences and insights with succession. Cathy Onion of Onion Farms will tell of the progress her family has made so far, what their next steps are, and what lessons they’ve learned. Vicki Allen will describe how she and her husband have navigated challenging complexities around family and finances to create a succession plan that has given them great relief. Vicki knows what can happen when succession and estate planning are not done well. Her father had had a will drawn up and an estate plan developed. But they were not updated, and so when he passed, Vicki and her sibling had to come up with $1 million to pay estate taxes.

The webinar will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on March 9th. $10/family.
